Holy crap… we’ve been drawn… but for real this time!!!

Yesterday I said to Mr T over breakfast “Today we will get drawn”.

He didn’t believe me. I pointed out it was Wednesday – they always draw on Wednesdays (this hasn’t stopped me checking for new draws every other day of the week though!), and it had been 2 weeks since the last one. “No” he says. The points wont be reduced again. And that was that!

Until 3:48pm… when I checked my Canadian Express Entry app and saw THIS…

447!!! We are 450… WE’VE BEEN DRAWN. But for real this time!

Could I get hold of Mr T? I tried: phone, text, messenger, facebook messenger, Skype call, facetime, snapchat, email… and probably a thousand other ways. No answer. How do you contain this excitement and panic? even worse than that though.. his phone was actually off!?!?

An hour, maybe an hour and a half later he turned his phone on. He had been for a run. Honestly! This was no time for Strava!

So I got to deliver the news this time. “We’ve been drawn. It’s happened. And nearly as important.. I was right”!

And so the process begins… and the lovely Andrea at Cando Immigration in downtown Kelowna has sent me the Invitation to Apply to prove it. I am back to panic and fear and excitement and a hundred other feelings. Some good. Some bloody fantastic. And some which I hate to say are awful! But hey! I’m a complex creature.

Up to now…

We have been toying with the idea of living in Canada for a while now. I’ve thought for a few years now I would like to live overseas, get stuck into another culture and learn a bit. and if this is in driving distance of a ski resort then all the better.

My husband is a dreamer. He has had his heart set on Canada since day 1. And France. And Australia. And New Zealand. What about the US? Is Japanese really that hard to master? I’m a bit more… errmmm… sensible? No. cautious is the word. And I don’t like being far away from my family.

To be honest it has taken a long time to get ourselves moving. I wanted financial security in the UK. So insisted we brought a house here first. Then we needed to wade through the confusing ream of paperwork which is immigration. It took me a good 9 months (9 whole months!!!) to realise that we needed and expert on the case. So we got one in Kelowna, Canada. An outfit called Cando Immigration who have been very very patient and helpful! When I was in the mood, I was returning information almost immediately. when I was having a wobble it would take me months.

Last September we decided bugger it! Lets go for residency! I don’t want a short term visa tied to a job. I don’t want to be unsure after 12 months where I will be living in 12 months time. (I’m not a student any more). So Cando Immigration held our hand to the point where we have completed all the paperwork ready to go into “The draw”.

I’m no expert, but basically you get scored on your suitability for Canada. Things like your age, years of work experience in particular occupations, your education etc all gets scored. and you come out with a number. Then every 2 – 3 weeks, the Canadian Immigration folk draw a number, and if you are higher than the number they have drawn, you are invited to apply. Simples!

So at the end of October/ Early November we found ourselves in “the draw”.
